Pete, one thing that amazed me moving here to Kentucky, is that many of the plants grow from late February until early December; our broccoli heads in 2008 were 2-3 times larger than anything in Maine, and the swiss chard was large enough to use as a fan. Then consider that in NOLA there is NO non-growing season, and it's easy to understand how quickly a vacant lot can become overgrown. Quite something to us Mainers who are used to gardening between Memorial Day and Labor Day.

When I was in NOLA, I did the tourist thing, and wanted to get to the lower Ninth, but somehow didn't have the courage to do so. That's the main regret of that great trip. At least I stayed in the city, ate in the city, and (except for a great side trip down the Mississippi to Venice) spent all my souvenir money in the city. That was my way of helping -- in addition to financial help I donated at the time.

NOLA is a great city. Those who say don't rebuild, don't live there. There's so much of that -- I don't want to give anything I have to anyone else attitude, it's truly sickening. That is what makes your mission to NOLA so important -- have we forgotten our humanity in the drive to spread anger and hate?

I grew up in Gentilly Woods in the 1950's and 60's. I went back to gut the church (St. Gabriels) in the year after the storm and revisit often to see what 'progress" has happened. I cannot tell you the anger I felt in the years after the storm Thank you again for your help. You can never truly understand what it means and has meant to the city.

I was fortunate enough to have visited New Orleans several years before Katrina. Such a special city, I think most of America cried with Her when Katrina ripped through Her heart.

Glad you could be a part of the rebuilding...

Your Church group is to be commended for the wonderful work you did and will continue doing. So many have simply forgotten the tragedy of New Orleans. Kudos to you and your fellow helpers.
